Healthy recipe conversions

It seems that many of you are in a major dilemma about baking.  I will be happy to share some of my tips for recipe conversion.

  • Certified Organic Butter may be substituted for shortening or margarine in any recipe.
  • Raw granulated sugar may be substituted for white sugar in any recipe.  Xylitol may be used in any recipe that does not require the “sugar” to caramelize.
  • An egg may be omitted if you add 1 Tablespoon Soy milk powder, 1 Tablespoon Cornstarch and 2 Tablespoon Water to any baked good.
  • An egg may be omitted if you add ½ ripe banana mashed.
  • Adding nut butter or fiber reduces the glycemic index of a food.
  • Aluminum free baking powder should be used in place of the traditional grocery store brands.
  • Baking powder combined with sour or butter milk makes a nice leavening.
  • Carob chips or organic chocolate chips may be substituted in any recipe that requires chocolate chips.
  • Vanilla may be made by soaking 2 vanilla beans (broken into 1” pieces) in a pint of vodka or rum for 6 weeks.
